Dwight Kept us guessing
THE EDITOR: I am writing to you about a past player by the name of Dwight Yorke. Recently there was a lot of speculation whether Dwight would return to the international scene. Our country’s World Cup campaign has already started and I believe we need to prepare more. I am suggesting that the TTFF announce many friendly internationals for better preparation for this World Cup campaign, and I mean friendlies such as Uruguay, Bolivia, Wales, and Canada. We should also play smaller teams so it can be used as a moral booster. If I am correct I think Angus Eve said, “When Northern Ireland scored that freak goal it really hit us because our confidence level was already low after the Scotland game.”
Anyways, back to Dwight. Now he has finally stated that he has fully retired from international football. I would like to ask why Dwight didn’t announce before the game that he was just thanking Tobago. Why did he keep fans so excited over a possible return. It hurts, because it felt that we (the fans) were deceived. I would like to say that Dwight shouldn’t have been allowed to wear the national kit which is so honourable because you, the person who wears it, represents our country. For the TTFF to allow Dwight to take a “sweat” in an apparel of such importance is disapointing.
The TTFF should have made him announce his future in the team first not a guessing game. I find it very immature of both Dwight and the TTFF to allow that to happen. I found it hard to believe that Dwight won a treble with my favourite club, Manchester United, and played his heart out for them, scored 29 in his first season and over 20 again in the next. Played for TT in the 2002 World Cup campaign and scored an overall of four goals. So at that time Dwight for his club played with heart but his commitment to TT was questionable. Nistelrooy who plays for both Manchester United and Holland gives 100 percent every time he plays a game for both club and most important country. Look at Ronaldo of Brazil, world’s best and plays heart and soul for both country and club. This was an unbalanced attribute of Dwight. I am sure whoever reads this will have no objection on this topic.
