Where are Owen’s clothes?
ALREADY grieving over the loss of their sibling, relatives of deceased prisoner Ignatius Owen fondly called ‘Shakes’ became more angry yesterday when they went to Remand Yard, Golden Grove, Arouca Prison to collect Owen’s clothes and they could not be found. “When we went to the prison yesterday morning to get the clothes that ‘Shakes’ was wearing when he was killed, the prison official could not find it. Shakes did not come in the prison naked, so where are his clothes?” asked Karen Owen, his sister. “There is a massive cover-up and this refusal to give us his clothes is just part of that cover up because it might possibly give clues to what took place.”
The bereaved sister made these statements shortly after the conclusion of the funeral service at the St Michael RC Church, Maracas Royal Road, Maracas St Joseph for ‘Shakes’ who was laid to rest yesterday after a quiet and brief funeral service. In her eulogy his niece Nicole Owen described her uncle as a quiet, hard-working man who was willing to help anyone. Father John Carm in his homily supported Nicole in her description and called for the persons responsible for the death of Shakes to be found, while indicating he has knowledge of several innocent people who are placed into prison and abused. An uneasy stir was created in the church when his estranged wife Liz Sheppard walked into the church and started crying. Because of her report of his lack of paying maintenance ‘Shakes’ was arrested, which led to a series of events and his death in prison.
