Tobago ACP promises more action on crime
ASSISTANT Commissioner of Police for Tobago, Michael Thomas, has given the assurance that with more police vehicles and manpower on the sister isle, more will be done to deal with the crime situation. He gave the assurance to Tobago East MP, Eudine Job-Davis, on Friday when the Joint Select Committee (JSC) enquiring into municipal corporations and service commissions met with members of the top brass of the Police Service. Job-Davis is a member of the JSC.
ACP Thomas pointed out that his main concern about crime on the island was the frequency of persons arriving on the ferry. He alluded to their being of unquestionable character, but asked directly, he said the statistics were not available to show that. He said while checks were done at the port in Tobago, there were concerns about the port security system and whether the checks were done properly. He said the police routinely carry out road checks and other spot checks, and he was confident with additional resources recently made available to Tobago things would improve.
Job-Davis expressed concern that there were more murders and other crimes on the island, and often when she goes home to Moriah: “I see a bunch of strange people and when I call the police they say they don’t have transportation.” She complained that the police station was walking distance from her home. ACP Thomas said warrant officers from Trinidad usually visited the island, since they were familiar with those who are wanted and may have fled to the island. He said there has been success but much more should be done.
