Another prisoner killed in Remand Yard
ANOTHER death has been recorded at the Remand Yard at Golden Grove Prison, Arouca. Around 11.45 am yesterday Kern Phillip was stabbed several times in the chest after an argument with a murder accused prisoner. Officers responding to the screams of the injured man rushed to the cell and took the bleeding victim to the Arima Medical Facility, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The attacker, who was also bleeding, was rushed to the hospital where he was treated and discharged. Two weeks ago, prisoner Ignatius Owen, who was arrested on a maintenance warrant, died as a result of beatings he received while being an inmate at Remand Yard. The Director of Public Prosecutions has since ordered an inquest into the death.
When Newsday visited the Arouca Police Station, investigators were still at the prison and no one could say what was the cause of the attack, or why Phillip was in prison. Efforts to contact Commissioner of Prisons Carlo Mc Honey were futile. In an unrelated matter, St James Police are trying to identify the skeletal remains of a man found yesterday evening on a river bank near the Foreshore Highway. According to reports, officers of the St James Police responded to reports of corbeaux seen pulling at something by the river bank around 3 pm. On investigation, they found a skeleton clad in jockey shorts, two underpants and black trousers. Police said that although they have not ruled out foul play, they believe the man drowned elsewhere in the recent floods, and his body washed up on the river bank. Visiting the scene were ASP Cadette, Insp Lezama and Sgt Martin. Sgt Martin is investigating.
