Pensioner butchered for seeing too much
IN WHAT has been described by seasoned policemen as a particularly gory murder, the body of a Maloney pensioner was found at his home yesterday with several chop wounds including a gash to the stomach. Police probing the murder of pensioner Winston “Daddy-O” Caruth, 73, said they believe the elderly man was butchered simply because he may have witnessed something he should not have. A check of his apartment revealed nothing had been stolen nor were there any signs of forced entry. Near the body was a watering can, which police said, suggested Caruth was attacked either while on his way to water his garden or while he was returning to the apartment. Caruth’s muffled screams, heard by neighbours around 4.30 am, led to the discovery of his body in a pool of blood.
Caruth’s intestines spilled from a gaping slash on his stomach onto the bloodstained concrete floor in front of his Building 18, Apartment 1-4-N home. Neighbours who spoke briefly with Newsday, expressed shock at the killing. “‘Daddy-O” never troubled anyone. He watched television, watered his plants and limed. He was a cool fellow’,” a resident who asked not to be identified, told Newsday. “Whoever killed him did so not because of robbery or anything ‘Daddy-O’ was involved in. He saw something and they killed him to shut him up,” the resident continued. Cpl Beepath Samai of Northern Division CID is continuing investigations. An autopsy is expected to be carried out today at the Forensic Science Centre in St James. No one has been arrested for the killing.
