Vendors challenging removal from market
MACOYA vendors, whose stalls were demolished three weeks ago, were yesterday granted leave by a High Court Judge to seek judicial review of the Tunapuna/Piarco Regional Corporation’s (TPRC) decision to remove them from the compound of the Macoya Market. Justice Humphrey Stollmeyer, presiding in the San Fernando High Court, granted leave to the vendors to seek a number of reliefs against the corporation’s action of evicting them.
Among the reliefs, was an undertaking that the corporation cease demolition of the vendors’ stalls. The vendors were given notices on August 29 by the TPRC ordering them to remove their goods from the market’s compound before September 14. On September 21, the TPRC commenced demolition works on some of the stalls. The vendors, who filed an application for judicial review in the Sub-Registry in San Fernando, packed the Third Civil court for hearing of the case yesterday. The lawsuit was argued by attorney Garnet Mungalsingh.
