Carenage residents protest death of youth killed by cops
Police were called out yesterday to quell a protest demonstration by residents of Schuller Street, Carenage, over the shooting death of 18-year-old Sherman Monsegue. Monsegue was shot dead on Wednesday when police claim Monsegue and another man fired at them and they returned fire. However, residents of Schuller Street claimed that Monsegue was gunned down in cold blood. They added that Monsegue and another man left to go to the beach on Wednesday and they were playing a game of cards when a group of officers from the Task Force burst on the scene and began threatening the boys.
An eyewitness said that Monsegue was taken to some bushes where he was shot dead by the officers. His body was then thrown into a van and whisked away, while another man was held. The police claimed that they recovered a revolver. Protesting Carenage residents are calling on Police Commissioner Trevor Paul to launch an immediate inquiry into the shooting death of Monsegue. They are also calling for an independent person to be placed in charge of that probe. “We will not rest until the truth is revealed and the persons responsible for the death of Monsegue are brought to justice,” said one of the protestors yesterday.
