Triplets again at Mt Hope Hospital
Last Friday, for the second time this year, triplets were born at the Women’s Hospital in Mt Hope. The births of the two girls and a boy to first-time parents Clyde and Emily Supersad took place ten weeks before their scheduled due date. “The more the merrier,” Clyde told Newsday. The Cunupia couple was expecting twins until a test done in the fifth month of Emily’s pregnancy showed three babies. Emily told Newsday she was warded three weeks before the birth of the triplets. Last Thursday, she got her wish to go home to spend time with her family.
Emily’s doctor advised her that if anything should happen, she should return to the hospital immediately. She had not been home for three hours, however, when she began experiencing pains. “Next thing I am back here in Mt Hope waiting, and had emergency surgery the following morning.” The triplets were delivered via caesarian section by doctors Mills and Sirjusingh on October 15, approximately one minute apart. The first was the boy at 8.40 am. Their weights ranged from less than two pounds to over three pounds. They have been named Sanjay, Sapna and Simran. “I probably watch too many Indian movies,” Emily quipped. She said their middle names will be Christian. The babies will remain warded at the neo-natal unit until the doctors decided it was safe for them to be discharged.
Their progress has been described by doctors as “much better than expected.” Only Sapna is still in an incubator, but she is feeding more than her siblings. Emily and Clyde, a tax monitoring officer, have many eager relatives waiting to assist with the babies. Asked what plans they had for their children, Clyde said, “All must go to university.” Emily agreed. “It is totally up to them what career they choose, but they must have a sound education.” The Supersads do not intend to have any more children in the near future. Clyde thanked all the dedicated doctors and nurses who provided “excellent care” for his wife and children. He also thanked God for the blessing given. While there have been criticisms of the service in the public health sector, the Supersads were satisfied with the experience they had. “I don’t think the private institution would have done it any better,” Clyde said.
