Boy, 12, caught driving car

A 12-year-old boy of Sunshine Avenue in San Juan will appear today before a Port-of-Spain magistrate charged with driving without a driver’s permit. The boy’s mother will also appear as she was charged with aiding and abetting a child to drive without a driver’s permit and obscene language, while his step-father is facing charges of assault of two officers. According to reports, Estate Constable Winston Melville and Cpl Merle Allen of the Chaguaramas Development Authority (CDA) were on patrol on Macqueripe Beach Road around 10 am yesterday, when they saw the boy driving a car.

The boy’s mother, 31, a vendor at the San Juan market, who was in the front passenger seat, allegedly told the officers, “All yuh doh like to see black people with nutten.” The boy’s step-father was seated in the back seat. According to further reports, as the officers attempted to arrest the mother and son, the step-father jumped into the picture and jostled the officers. He was also arrested. When Newsday visited the CDA’s office, officers said the Macqueripe Road is regularly used to illegally teach people to drive and they were making moves to stop it.
