UNC’s Tim labels ACB cops ‘Reputation Death Squad’
There are two death squads in the Police Service. One for the assassination of people and another, “A Reputation Death Squad,” called the Anti-Corruption Bureau — which is charged with the assassination of people’s characters. This was the charge made by temporary Opposition Senator Dr Tim Gopeesingh during the Budget debate yesterday. Gopeesingh said the “Reputation Death Squad” fell under the direct control of the Attorney General. “Its main aim seems to be to tarnish and damage the reputation of outstanding citizens. I am a victim of it.” Goopeesingh, who was once charged, but was later exonerated, said, “Outstanding citizens of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago who are not members of the PNM” were being targeted by this “politically motivated squad.”
He lamented that one of the Caribbean’s premier entrepreneurs had his character assassinated on Monday, “falling victim to this political group of henchmen masquadering as police officers.” Gopeesingh was referring to the search of the home of CL boss Lawrence Duprey. He said all this was supported by an entourage of media personnel. “How the media know that they going there? They call them,” he said, answering his own question. He said the same strategy — of informing the media — was used when there was a search of Carlos John’s home and Basdeo Panday’s home. Gopeesingh charged this was all done to divert the population away from the “stench of corruption emanating from the staterooms.”
