Senior citizen stabbed to death
While on his way to school, a 14-year-old boy yesterday played a key role in the arrest of a 26-year-old murder suspect at Second Caledonia, Morvant. The schoolboy, who responded to a distress call from the wife of a murder victim, jumped over a fence and chased down a man dressed in dark clothing. He dodged a large stone thrown at him and managed to hold on to the suspect. Morvant residents, who also responded and helped the schoolboy, later handed the suspect over to E-999 officers who were on mobile patrol in the area. The officers also seized the car keys belonging to the murder victim.
The drama started around 9.30 am, when two men went to retired Port Authority worker Lloyd Bailey’s house. The killers demanded the keys for the car belonging to Bailey, 73, and his wife Evelyn, 71, as well as cash. When the couple told the men there was no cash in the house, one of them began stabbing Lloyd, and his wife screamed out in shock. The killer then turned the knife on Evelyn, stabbing her in the forehead. As she collapsed to the ground, she called out to her neighbour, Marilyn Pierre for assistance. A shocked Pierre told Newsday she ran to the house just in time to see a man with dark clothing leaving the house.
The murder victim’s wife is now warded in serious condition at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital. The suspect’s accomplice escaped in the melee, but a warrant was issued yesterday for his arrest. Police officers were high in praise of the action of the schoolboy and believe that the murder will be solved. Yesterday, the murder toll stood at 222. Morvant residents expressed disgust over the crime situation in the country and the murder of a fellow resident. They called on the authorities to reward the schoolboy, who risked his life to assist with the arrest. Investigations are continuing.
