Cop in court for beating female cop

A POLICE sergeant will go on trial on January 10 2005, on a charge of assaulting a female police officer. Sgt Garth Nelson, who was last attached to the Firearms Interdiction Unit, appeared before Magistrate Maureen Gafoor in the Port-of-Spain Third Magistrates’ Court yesterday charged with assault by beating WPC Wendy Esdelle at Chacon Street on December 27, 2003. Esdelle is attached to the Finance Branch of the Police Service.

The charge was laid by acting Supt Martin Morrain of the Port-of-Spain CID. When the matter was called yesterday, State attorney Tricia Hudlin appeared on the behalf of the prosecution. Nelson’s attorney Keith Scotland was absent. Magistrate Gafoor informed the accused that she was fixing the matter for trial on January 10. Nelson, who is on continuing bail,  has been a police officer for the past 24 years.
