Seven receive UWI excellence awards

Seven persons on Thursday night received University of the West Indies (UWI) Vice Chancellor’s Awards for their outstanding service to the institution. Special mention was made of  Dr Margaret Rouse-Jones, campus librarian at St Augustine for the past seven years, and Betty-Ann Rohlehr, who heads the Instructional Development Unit at St Augustine. She also received several significant awards including the award for Excellence in Research and Publications in the Information field in the Caribbean, the National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Fellowship, a Rockefeller Fellowship and many more. Other recipients were Dr Willard Pinnock, Department of Chemistry at Mona campus for excellence in teaching; Dr Sean McDowell, Department of Biological and Chemical Sciences at Cave Hill campus, for his research accomplishments.


Prof Ishenkumba Kahwa, Department of Chemistry at Mona campus, received his award for research accomplishments and contribution to public service. Prof Winston Tinto, Department of Biological and Chemical Sciences at Cave Hill campus, got his for research accomplishments and service to the university community, while Stephney Ferguson, campus librarian at Mona campus, was heralded for service to the community and contribution to public service. The Awards for Excellence was instituted by the vice chancellor in 1994 as a way of recognising excellence on the part of the academic and senior administrative staff.
