‘Muslim’ jailed five years
A 37-YEAR-OLD man of no fixed place of abode was yesterday sentenced to five years imprisonment with hard labour by a San Fernando magistrate on charges of larceny of $30,000 worth of cellular phones and DVD players. Glen Teeluck, aka ‘Muslim’, Jason Sampath and Gerald Sampath pleaded guilty before deputy Chief Magistrate Mark Wellington in the First Court. The court heard that around 2.50 pm on Saturday August 7, manageress Tricia Sweeney of L & J Cellular Limited in Montano Plaza, High Street, San Fernando secured the business before leaving for home. Upon returning around 8.05 am on Monday August 9, Sweeney discovered the store broken into and a number of cellular phones and DVD players, together valued $31,850, missing.
A report was made to San Fernando CID and detective Constable Rishi Ramdass, acting on information, arrested and charged the mall’s security guard Gerald Neemah, 40, of Solomon Street, Vistabella and also arrested Teeluck. Both men made their first court appearance before Magistrate Wellington on August 19, where Neemah pleaded not guilty and was granted bail in the sum of $40,000 with a surety and had his matter adjourned to January. Teeluck, who has a criminal record of seven previous convictions, was denied bail and remanded in custody. Making his fifth court appearance yesterday, Teeluck pleaded guilty and was sentenced to five years imprisonment with hard labour.
