Catholics oppose Trinity Cross
THE CATHOLIC Commission on social justice has thrown its weight behind moves to scrap the name of the country’s highest national honour, the Trinity Cross. This follows last Tuesday’s filing of a constitutional motion by the Maha Sabha in the San Fernando High Court asking for the award to be declared discriminatory, which is due to be heard next week.
In a recent statement the Catholic Commission said the award should be renamed to reflect the sentiments of the national constitution and the national anthem. Such a move, said the group, would also be in line with the fact that the country is multi-racial. Saying the country ought not need to wait on a court ruling, the commission said: “The time for action is now.”
