Welder stabbed to death

A WALK back to his Church Street, Duncan Village, San Fernando home two o’ clock yesterday morning after buying barbque ended in the brutal murder of 22-year-old Richard Dexter Singh. Police said an ongoing feud between Singh and other young men who lived nearby, resulted in him being stabbed to death. A 22-year-old murder suspect was reportedly warded at San Fernando General Hospital suffering from chop wounds. Singh, an unemployed welder, lived with his parents, three brothers and three sisters at their Church Street home. The deceased had been ‘liming’ Friday night with his elder brother Wendell, who told of how their joy turned into horror in mere minutes. “We, Dexter and somefriends went to the mall,” Wendell said, “and we come back about two.”

Singh, he said, apparently did not approve of the home-cooked meal and left to purchase a box of barbque from a nearby roadside stall at Duncan Village Junction. Police said Singh was accosted by three young men and repeatedly stabbed. Wendell and his sister Ria, spoke briefly about animosity which had developed between their brother and a group of young men who lived on an adjacent street. “We know who kill him,” Wendell said, “and we know for what.” Singh’s life was threatened recently Ria said, by the young men. “But let the police find out,” Ria, sobbing uncontrollably, said. Other family members declined to disclose what caused the feud.

As Singh walked down to  Church Street via an unusually narrow side road from the Duncan Village Main Road, he was apparently accosted by the men. Police believe Singh had a knife when he left home. During the scuffle, police said, he stabbed one of the men. Singh fell near the doorstep of Farnella Adam Jackson, who told Sunday Newsday that she was awaken by the commotion. Jackson said she opened her door and actually saw Singh about to be stabbed. “I saw him lying on the ground and I called out to the young man with the knife over him,” Jackson, a mother of six, said. “All I could do was pray,” Jackson said, “but I saw the knife and I thought the man was joking.” Singh died on the spot, having bled from several stab wounds to the chest. Insp Hilary Bereton and Cpl Anmarie Mc Dowel visited the scene and are conducting investigations.
