Soca star hooked up to life support system

Popular soca artiste Onika Bostic remained connected to a life support machine at the Intensive Care Unit of the Port-of-Spain General Hospital yesterday. Her condition remains unchanged and doctors maintained that chances of survival were slim. Bostic remained in a comatose state yesterday and was visited by her mother Jacinta, her sister and brother along with close relatives. Clarence “Ungu” Edwards, leader of the Antiguan band Burning Flames, visited Bostic at hospital yesterday and expressed sadness over the accident, which has left his lead singer in critical condition. He urged other entertainers and the citizens of the country to pray for her recovery. Yesterday, the North West Regional Health Authority (NWRHA) issued a press release to confirm that Bostic remains in critical condition.

According to the NWRHA, in an effort to ensure the public is provided with accurate information on Bostic’s condition, the authority will release appropriate information in a timely manner. The authority insisted that patient confidentiality is a right of all patients in Trinidad and Tobago. In respect of these rights, “the authority cannot release certain details of any patient’s condition and the understanding of the media and public is appreciated,” the release ended. Yesterday, nurses at ICU told Newsday they were being swamped with calls from members of the public and this is causing serious problems keeping the telephone lines constantly jammed. The nurses added that even employees of the hospital have been trying every chance to catch a glimpse of the soca star.
