Police promotions by month’s end

THE promotion of 75 police inspectors which was put on hold pending discussions between the  Police Second Division executive and Police Commissioner Trevor Paul is expected to be resolved by tomorrow. Yesterday, secretary of the Second Division Cpl Noel Chase told Newsday his executive expects the existing concerns about the promotions to be ironed out at the meeting.

And he also expects the promotion for the inspectors to be made at the end of the month. Additionally, more than 220 corporals will be elevated to the rank of sergeant. Promotions will also be made for the rank of corporal. May this year will mark two years since promotions were made in the Second Division. The Second Division wrote the Police Service Commission two weeks ago asking the PSC to put a hold on the promotions. The PSC wrote Commissioner Paul giving him six months to deal with the situation.

According to Chase, the association has come up with a system which could be used to ensure that all officers are given an excellent chance of promotion. Since the promotions were put on hold, hundreds of officers have been acting in positions. “That is not encouraging for officers who may tend to become frustrated,” Chase said. Chase Secretary added that his executive is also in the process of fine-tuning proposals for better wage packages for police officers. These negotiations should start in April. Among these proposals will be a $5,000 incentive each month for all police officers. Police officers attached to Government’s Anti Crime Unit currently enjoy this $5,000 incentive apart from their salaries.
