Murders and robberies worry San Juan business
The San Juan Business Association (SJBA) President, Gail Merhair, has advised its members to limit their movements, and stay at home as much as possible for security reasons in light of kidnappings, murders and other crimes which take place when one is away from home. “The latest murder of Halima Rampersad, who was a well-known and prominent person in the area of San Juan, has also prompted the association to call on the police to leave no stone unturned in their investigation.
“We are not asking for any special treatment, but we feel that the police should adopt a best practice policy, in investigating all angles and analysing the many clues in the probe,” said Merhair in a release yesterday. The association is also urging all to remain calm and referred to another incident which occurred on Monday in which Rev Cyril Paul, head of the Inter-Religious Organisation, was beaten and robbed. “What kind of society are we breeding? All is not right, and any person or group in authority that advocates this theory has buried their head deep in the sands of ignorance,” the association’s president noted.
According to the release, the SJBA remains on high alert, cognisant of the trying times and is committed to assisting the Government and the police in fighting crime one step at a time. “With Government’s stated commitment to providing the necessary funds to fight crime, the association believes that we should shift some focus to the training of law enforcement officials, particularly in forensic science and in investigative techniques that are critical to maximising the physical resources that are available in the Police Service,” noted Merhair.
