VENGEANCE IS MINE, SAYS PENAL MAN

A 36-year-old Penal man was arrested after he went on a chopping rampage on Saturday night. it is believed to be a vengeance act on a police constable attached to Mon Repos Police Station and on his family. PC Barry Muchoon, 29, of Penal Rock Road and stationed at the Highway Patrol Unit South is now warded at the San Fernando General Hospital (SFGH) nursing chop wounds to his chest, abdomen, feet and hands. Two others, also chopped during the attack, remained warded in a satisfactory condition — Muchoon’s father-in-law, Karamlal Sooklal, 56 of Nagessar Trace and Sebastien Butcher, 36, of Chin Chin Road, Cunupia.

According to a police report, around 8.30 pm, Sooklal was liming at a cousin’s house at Jhulai Trace when the suspect, riding a bicycle, approached him. The suspect, armed with a cutlass, alighted the bicycle, ran towards Sooklal and without saying anything,  began mercilessly chopping Sooklal. A passer-by, Butcher, was also dealt several chops. The report continued saying that the suspect made his way to Nagessar Trace, where he confronted Sooklal’s daughter, Tricia and attempted to chop her. However, the report said that Tricia’s husband, Muchoon got between the two, allowing his wife to escape.  Unfortunately, Muchoon was severely attacked, sustaining serious chop wounds about the body.

The suspect managed to escape but was held a few hours later by police officers attached to the Penal CID. Speaking with Newsday from his hospital bed yesterday, Muchoon said that he is confused as to why the man attacked him, his father-in-law and Butcher, as nothing was said during the attack. “All I know is that I arrested the man about six years ago on drug-related charges; it may have been a vengeance act,” Muchoon said. The man was charged and is expected to appear before a Siparia magistrate today. Cpl Monsegue of the Penal CID is investigating.
