Female cops mark Int’l Women’s Day

Female police officers of the Port-of-Spain Division will host a week of activities commencing today in observance of International Women’s Day. A committee led by Ag ASP Julie Carrington and including Ag Inspectors Helen Morris, Joanne Castanada James, Ag Sgt Jemma Gordan and WPC McMillan of the Environmental Management Authority, will carry out a list of activities starting from visits to “high risk” schools today to a conference to deal with issues relating to women on Friday.

Yesterday, Carrington said that female officers from the Port-of-Spain Division would go to various high risk schools, to meet with students and give them an insight on what policing is all about. The students would also be exposed to counselling and advice. Tomorrow, the officers are expected to stage a march from the Brian Lara Promenade to various areas in Port-of-Spain and then make their way back to the Promenade.

Senior citizen homes could expect a visit by the female officers on Wednesday and on Thursday, the same officers plan to visit a high risk area in Port-of-Spain. They would distribute hampers to the needy and provide counselling to families undergoing emotional trauma. At the end of the week of activities on Friday, officers will gather at the Woodbrook Police Station to discuss issues affecting women followed by a luncheon. Carrington said that the week of activities was made possible through the assistance of corporate citizens.
