AG calls on Opposition to support CCJ amendment
Attorney General Jeremie John, in reading the Act to amend the agreement establishing the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) in its original jurisdiction and for related matters, called on the Opposition to join with the Government to unanimously pass the Bill. Jeremie cited comments from deceased Justice Telsford Georges to make his case for the establishment of the CCJ.
He quoted Georges’ from 1970 who said that sovereignty is compromised by allowing the resolution of legal disputes to go to the jurisdiction of the former colonial masters. Jeremie also said that the Government has studied the Privy Council ruling on the Jamaican matter, and assured that they are ready to address Opposition concerns dealing with constitutional matters.
