Carenage handyman is 60th murder victim

A 32-year-old Caren-age handyman died Wednesday night after he was shot twice after being ambushed by a group of men while walking along Abe Poujade Street, Carenage, Wednesday night. Clem Garrison Clarke was shot in the back of the neck and chest. His murder is the 60th for the year. Police reports revealed that Clarke’s death was gang-related. Yesterday, his sister Terry Mattadden said her family was grieving over the killing and added that her brother did not deserve to die the way he did. According to Mattadden, Clarke was a “little miserable,” but he was not a bad person.

She added that her brother often complained about threats made by a gang of men, but he never took it on because he felt he could deal with the situation. She revealed that the police knew who did the shooting and said the family was now leaving the matter in the hands of the police. An autopsy carried out at the Forensic Science Centre yesterday revealed that Clarke died from shock and haemorrhage consistent with gunshot injuries.

When Newsday visited the scene of the shooting, residents said they were alerted by gunshots around 4.30 am yesterday, and on looking out saw Clarke’s body on the ground. Homicide officers are also investigating the death of 33-year-old Seapaul Singh of Chinatown,  Belmont. Singh was shot in the head around 5.30 pm on Wednesday. Police investigators have been unable to establish a motive for the killing but added that they have information which suggests that the shooting was drug-related. When Newsday visited the home of the murder victim, relatives were not at home. Investigations are continuing.
