Parking relief coming in PoS
DESPITE recent increases in car park fees and the scarcity of parking in Port-of-Spain, there is hope yet. Plans are afoot to expand parking hours and allow additional streets for parking. This was the assurance yesterday from Downtown Owners and Merchants Association (DOMA) president Gregory Aboud. Earlier this week, the National Insurance Property Development Company (Nipdec) announced it was increasing daily and monthly parking fees at its multi-storey car park on Edward Street.
Nipdec officials said the increased fees were due to similar increases at other car parks in the city, and for the company to continue to provide a high level of service to its customers. Asked if the increases were due to problems associated with the payment of Value Added Tax (VAT), the officials said they were unaware of this and the new rates were VAT inclusive. They added that prices at other Nipdec car parks in Port-of-Spain would vary depending on their location. Aboud said parking within Port-of-Spain had become increasingly difficult since Nipdec’s Richmond Street car park was shut-down to make way for construction of the new Government Campus Plaza, which will house new headquarters for the Ministries of Education and Legal Affairs.
