Cricket impasse demonstration of power
THE EDITOR: The present impasse between the WI Board and the WI players is a typical example of the politician and the need at all times to demonstrate power and that “I” not “You” are in control. So the WI Board have picked a second string team without any thought whatsoever for our cricket heritage; the paying spectators and fans all over the Caribbean; the image that is presented, as we wash our dirty linen before the entire world of cricket in particular and the sporting world in general. Another graphic example of our absolute inability to deal with problems like this when they are small. These people vacillate and prevaricate until the problem has developed into a massive problem and the WICBC have run themselves so far out on a limb that to get back down we have to cut down the entire tree.
It is not difficult to recall the days of Rae, Stollmeyer, Short etal; these situations arose but were dealt with long before they became the suppurating sore that requires major surgery to resolve and they were dealt with quietly and efficiently. My suggestion is that all the organisations involved namely WICB, WIPA, C&W, Digicel etc with their respective legal counsel sit down somewhere behind locked doors and no one is allowed to leave until the matter has been resolved amicably in the long-term. Perhaps a skilled arbitrator should chair the meeting. But one thing I know we cannot face the might of South Africa with the depleted side that has been selected and moreover, at the next WICBC meeting, we elect statesmanlike people to head this important body in the future interest of WI cricket.
