Disabled South woman gets walker, food
GOOD Samaritan Iris Tadier of Brooklyn, New York, 81, has donated a walker and a box of groceries to physically challenged Carmen Seelochan of Robertson Trace, Pluck Road, San Francique. However, Seelochan, 51, who was born with a deformity in both legs, was not at home to accept the gift yesterday. Seelochan lives alone in a one-room shack without electricity, pipe-borne water or telephone utilities. Her humble one-bedroom house is surrounded by tall bushes. Tadier was in Trinidad last month when she read Newsday’s exclusive story highlighting the woman’s plight. Seelochan has no one to care for her and experiences great difficulty in walking. She rarely leaves her home.
Speaking to Newsday before she left for the US last week, Tadier said: “When I read the story, I became very disturbed. My heart went out to her and I thought it was in my best interest to help her.” Tadier donated a walker to assist Seelochan in moving around, a box of non-perishable food items, kitchen utensils and bed sheets, but Seelochan was not home to receive them yesterday. Neighbours said she was attending clinic at the San Fernando General Hospital. Newsday reporter Rhondor Dowlat and photographer Nicholas Ramjass left the items on the steps to her house and asked neighbours to keep an eye on the items until Seelochan returned home.
