Crime reigning supreme
THE EDITOR: Today, Trinis fear for their lives more than ever, as murders and kidnappings are carried out with impunity. For the justice system is in shambles and the majority of lawbreakers go unpunished. There is no longer a sense of security among the public. People generally feel unsafe when driving or walking on a street alone.
This phobia reaches the courtrooms when jurors are called upon to do their civic duty. Can we really expect a juror to find high profile criminals guilty, when at the back of the mind lies the thought of being executed themselves? Do we really expect known insurrectionists, drug lords and murderers to be convicted and/or executed in this country? Those cases are a farce and another waste of taxpayers money. The authorities are too spineless, complacent, self-serving for real justice to prevail.
A clear message must be sent to criminals, radical changes must be implemented now. It bears repeating — too many people are doing whatever they please in this country. When a semblance of security returns for the average man is when the proper ingredients are being added to the anti-crime brew. May God be our staple diet.
