Fishermen refuse to report wharf robbery
POLICE DETECTIVES have called on fishermen, who were victims of Thursday’s early morning robbery in which more than $100,000 in cash and jewelry was taken by three armed men, at King’s Wharf in San Fernando, to come forward and lodge their report. Up to yesterday, no one has been arrested in connection with the incident.
Newsday understands that some of the fishermen were forced to jump into the cold waters of the Gulf of Paria and swim out into the ocean in a bid to escape the bandits. Investigators told Newsday yesterday they believe that reports from the robbery victims would be vital, and urged them to make their reports so that the necessary investigations could be properly done and the suspects arrested. It was reported that 20 fish vendors were confronted by three armed men, two toting guns and the other a cutlass, at around 2.30 am.
The men announced a hold-up and made their victims lie on the ground and ordered that the fishermen place their money, jewelry, cellular phones and other valuables in a bag. Some of the victims were reportedly planassed about their bodies when they refused to give up their belongings. The suspects reportedly escaped in a black B13 Nissan Sentra, which was parked a few metres from the scene of the incident. San Fernando detectives are continuing investigations.
