2 MURDERS IN 24 HOURS MAR EASTER FESTIVITIES IN TOBAGO

Tobago recorded its second murder in less than 24 hours when the mother of a ten-month-old baby boy, who suffered burns in an early morning fire at Plymouth several weeks ago, was fatally stabbed by someone she knew at her home at Buccoo late Sunday night. Jiselle Grant, who celebrated her 24th birthday last Thursday, was pronounced dead at the Scarborough Hospital. Grant was reportedly attacked by a man she knew, inside her home at the junction of Chance Street and the Buccoo Main Road about 11.30 pm.

The victim was reportedly stabbed 17 times about the body. According to reports, Grant had attended the popular Missionary Harvest at the Montgomery Moravian Church at Bethel earlier on Sunday. After returning  home, Grant had a shower and was later working in the kitchen when a man who was liming and drinking at the backyard of the premises, rushed through the open kitchen-door and reportedly attacked her and stabbed her repeatedly about the body. The victim’s screams were reportedly drowned out by the several DJ music systems in operation at the popular Buccoo “Sunday School” fete. However, a woman was able to hear a scream and alerted relatives and other persons in the front section of the home. By that time, her attacker had reportedly fled the scene.

The victim was taken by EHS ambulance to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Sometime after the incident, a suspect was apprehended by police in the Mt Pleasant area, about two miles from Buccoo. Up to yesterday afternoon, the man was said to be assisting police with enquiries into Grant’s murder. Grant was the mother of little JJ Julien who was burnt about the leg during an early morning fire on March 4 at a house in Plymouth, where he lived with his parents.

The boy remains warded at the Scarborough Hospital. Grant’s murder follows that of 20-year-old Larry Renwick Phillips, of Moriah, at an apartment  home at Glen Road in Scarborough around 4.30 am Sunday. Investigators have not ruled out robbery as a motive in that murder. The murders threw a damper on Easter festivities in the island, moreso at Buccoo. Scarborough Police are continuing investigations into Phillips’murder, while Grant’s murder is being investigated by Old Grange Police.
