Man dies in crash minutes from home
Minutes before driving into his Williamsville home with fast-food he had purchased for himself and his wife, Rishi Siewnarinesingh, 30, lost control of his car and slammed into an electricity pole on Sunday night. He died while undergoing surgery at San Fernando General Hospital (SFGH). According to a police report, it was around 8 pm when Siewnarinesingh, of Poona Road, was driving his blue Nissan Sentra east along the Poona Road, when he attempted to overtake another vehicle in the vicinity of the Poona Recreation Ground. Siewnarinesingh, the lone occupant, lost control of his vehicle and slammed into an electricity pole.
Siewnarinesingh was pinned in the driver’s seat, police said. Firemen from Mon Repos Fire Headquarters rushed to the scene within minutes. They cut the wrecked vehicle almost in two pieces using the jaws of life to free Siewnarinesingh. An EHS ambulance rushed Siewnarinesingh to the SFGH, but according to the report, he died while undergoing massive surgery to treat severe head and chest injuries. He was an employee at his uncle’s business place for the past 15 years — Mona’s Transport and Hardware Limited. Speaking with Newsday yesterday, Siewnarinesingh’s father, Russel, said his son left home to purchase food for himself and his wife Karen. He was not far away from home, the father added, when tragedy struck.
The wife was too distraught to speak to Newsday yesterday. She kept asking for her husband — “When is he coming home?” “My son was a very devout Hindu, he was surely the favourite in this part because since his tragic death, hundreds of people have been flooding my home extending their heart warming sympathy,” Russel said. Siewnarinesingh was married to Karen for just over two years. The couple expected to move into their own house by the end of this year. “Just one minute away and he never got home alive. He got into accident at the bottom of the hill and his house was just on top of the hill,” one male relative sobbed at Russell’s home yesterday. Cpl Rodriguez of the Gasparillo Police Station is investigating.
