Murder at the beach
NINETEEN-YEAR-OLD Alister West of Guapo, left home to attend the annual Easter Sunday party on Vessigny Beach and ended up being murdered on the shore. His body which bore large gaping wounds on the back and neck, was discovered lying on the seashore early yesterday morning. Police are working on the theory that West, of Alexander Street, Vance Rivere, was killed following an argument over a woman.
According to a police report, West left home to attend the party and was seen around 6.30 pm at the party with a woman. Around 6.55 am yesterday, West’s lifeless body clad in a black armless vest, plaid short pants and a pair of socks, was discovered on the seashore mere metres from the water’s edge. The party was held on the beach close to the car park area. A party of policemen led by ASP Mohammed, Senior Supt Nimrod, Insp Wells, Ag Sgt Ramnarine and PCs Garraway and Blache of the South Western Police Division, visited the scene. District Medical Officer Dr Carmona, examined the body and ordered its removal to the Forensic Science Centre, Port-of-Spain, for an autopsy.
Police investigators said that they were uncertain about the circumstances surrounding the teenager’s gruesome murder, but suspected he had an argument with other men on the beach during the early hours of yesterday morning while the party was in full swing. West’s mother, Shirley, told Newsday yesterday that her son, a construction worker, left home in good spirits to attend the beach party. “I am not sure what happened to my son or who would want to do my son harm. He was such a pleasant boy” Shirley said. The mother said that her son’s body was badly ripped up by his assailant. Apparently with a cutlass or a dagger, “God alone knows what happened that night and why,” Shirley said. West lived at home with his mother, father Garnet, two sisters and a brother. Ag Sgt Ramnarine of the La Brea Police Station is continuing investigations.
