Businessman charged with assaulting cop

WELL-known Barataria businessman and club-owner Mickey Singh yesterday appeared before Port-of-Spain Third Court Magistrate Gladys Gaffoor charged with assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest and using obscene language. According to reports, Singh and friends were at Tyrico Bay, Maracas, around 3.30 pm on Easter Monday, when an incident took place. Uniformed PC Achiba of the Belmont Police Station warned people on the beach about their actions and words.

An altercation took place and PC Achiba was slapped. After the altercation, Singh was arrested and charged. Singh pleaded not guilty when he appeared before the magistrate, and was placed on $2,000 bail. The matter was adjourned to September 15. In an unrelated matter, North-Eastern Division police believe they made a breakthrough in several robberies around the North Coast with the arrest of a 36-year-old Marabella man, who was in possession of a firearm. According to reports, officers of the North-Eastern Division Task Force, under Cpl La Pierre, searched a man at Maracas Bay on Easter Monday, and found a loaded .38 revolver. Police believe the man, of Marabella, San Fernando, had intended to rob sea-bathers who were at the beach on that day.
