Pan goes down memory lane in Tobago tonight

FIVE steelbands in two categories will set the stage for pan music action in the 2005 edition of Pan Trinbago’s Pan Down Memory Lane, and the TSTT-sponsored Pan In the 21st Century competitions, in Tobago tonight. Showtime is 7 pm. Joint conventional defending champion Katzenjammers will come up against NLCB Buccooneers and Our Boys Steel Orchestras, while Dem Boys and Metro Stars are the featured groups in the single pan band segment, in the first of six-preliminary rounds of competition. Conventional contestants are required to play tunes selected from a contemporary world beat repertoire, and the respective arrangers adapting the desired musical items should be innovative and creative according to a release from Pan Trinbago.

Single pan bands can play any selection — except a calypso — in that indigenous rhythm in the six-minute playing time allotted. Participating bands will be judged at their panyards or venue of choice. The adjudication panel for each division will have tomorrow off, before the contest resumes on Sunday evening at 5 pm with action in Pan Trinbago’s South/Central and North zones. The roving adjudication panels will continue their work through Thursday April 7 before the 12 finalists in each category are announced.
