Chutney star Adesh critical
mega chutney/crossover star Adesh Samaroo is warded in a critical condition at the Intensive Care Unit at the Community Hospital in Cocorite, following an early morning accident at Eastern Main Road, St Augustine. According to police reports around 3.30 am, Samaroo, 23, was travelling west along the Eastern Main Road in his four-wheeled Frontier pick-up near Emerald Plaza, St Augustine, when he picked up a skid, went air borne and crashed into a utility pole on the left side of the road before crashing into a wall.
Fortunately for Samaroo and his front seat passenger, JMC Triveni drummer Anil Soogrim, 31, their seat belts and airbags were activated, preventing more extensive injuries. Samaroo and Soogrim had to be pulled out of the vehicle, while a third man was thrown out. The fourth passenger was uninjured. The injured men were rushed to the Eric Williams Medical Complex, where Soogrim was warded in a serious condition with injures to his stomach and neck, while Samaroo was transferred to the Community hospital at Cocorite due to the overcrowded ICU ward.
According to family, friends and police sources, Samaroo is in a critical condition, having suffered a broken jaw, cracked skull, ruptured inside and internal bleeding. The other two passengers, friends of the two entertainers, were treated and discharged. Samaroo is well known locally and internationally for his mega back-to-back hits for 2003/2004 “Rum Till I Die” and “Rajin.” According to police sources, Samaroo and his friends left a bar in Tacarigua and were heading to Curepe for food, when the accident took place.
Spokesman for the Samaroo family Imtiaz Seepersad said Samaroo’s injuries are critical but he considers Samaroo’s chances of recovery as good. “He is talking and is jovial. He has recognised his parents and even sent a message to his fans singing ‘Love You All’.” Seepersad said, “Adesh is not very critical and in dying stages. Just for the fact that he was released and transported to Cocorite means he is not as critical as was said. He is critical but stable.” He denied that Adesh was speeding and also called on fans to continue praying and to send their love. Seepersad also expressed confidence that following a quick recovery Adesh will be able to fulfil his engagements in Guyana in two weeks, and those in Canada, New York and Disney World later this year. Samaroo is also a part-time singer with JMC Trevini which was also due to travel with him.
Officials at the hospital said, “He is critical, very critical and there is nothing the doctors, his fans or the media can do now, except stop harassing everyone and pray.” When Newsday visited the Cocorite Hospital, family members were gathered outside his room but were prevented from entering. Visiting the scene of the accident were Insp Hansraj, PC Traboulay, officials of the Emergency Health Services, officials of the Fire Services and Securicor Security Ltd. PC Traboulay is continuing investigations.
