Looter control team placed in city

Ag Police Commissioner Glen Roach yesterday called an emergency meeting at Police Headquarters, to put in place measures to avoid looting in the city. At around 3 pm yesterday, executive officers as well as the Head of the Port-of-Spain Division, and the Port-of-Spain CID and fire officers were summoned to the meeting. The Ag Commissioner discussed strategies to avoid lawlessness in the city. Officers were told to put in place the necessary security arrangements to avoid business places from being broken into.

The initiatives include a round the clock presence of police and soldiers, mobile and foot patrols. Sunday Newsday learned that certain parts of Port-of-Spain will remain closed to vehicular traffic today. This is to facilitate the clean-up exercise and the work of fire prevention officers. Despite repeated requests by the police for people with no business in the City to stay away, several people converged close to the scene of the massive fire and looked on at the activities. A senior officer said yesterday that no lawlessness will be tolerated since the police and army will maintain a visible presence to maintain law and order.
