Shock, sadness at scene of fire

GOVERNMENT MINISTERS and prominent members of the local business community were among concerned onlookers at the scene of the multi-million dollar fire which destroyed several businesses in downtown Port-of-Spain yesterday. Here are their reactions at the scene:

Joan Yuille-Williams, Minister of Community Development, Culture and Gender Affairs: The minister promised that tenants of the People’s Mall will be taken care of and will be offered alternative accommodations.

"We have to put a short-term, interim and long-term solution in place. The Prime Minister has been called and he has spoken to UdeCOTT. "Right now it will be a temporary place. It is important that they maintain their space."

Jearlene John, CEO of Pizza Boys: John said she was feeling pain for the people of People’s Mall. "I feel sad for them. At least we at Pizza Boys will be able to relocate our employees. Our employees won’t lose a day’s work. Right now we are relocating them."

Robert Boos, grandson of Y De Lima’s founder: "If the Prime Minister can’t contain a fire how can he stop kidnapping and crime? Nobody is safe. They should fire whoever is responsible!"

Anglican Bishop Calvin Bess: According to Bishop Bess, weekend services at the Holy Trinity Cathedral have been cancelled. "We have to clean and evacuate the building."

Commenting on water problems at the scene, the Bishop added: "The system is not working and this must be dealt with. We need to get the protective services working because we pay taxes. "We need to deal with all these necessary things."

Reverend Colin Sampson, Dean of Holy Trinity Cathedral: "They are doing their best," he said, referring to efforts by firefighters to control the blaze.
