Forensic experts search for clues today

A team of forensic experts, accompanied by police and fire prevention officers, will continue excavation of the north western side of the gutted People’s Mall today, in a bid to find out exactly what sparked the blaze on Saturday which destroyed eight business places, the People’s Mall and a Ministry of Health office. The forensic team visited the scene yesterday to ascertain what type of equipment will be required for use at the scene. The fire prevention officers also visited the area and have given firm instructions that the area is to be preserved and not trespassed on by anyone.

Only fire prevention officers, the police investigators and the forensic experts will be allowed. Newsday learnt that searches will be carried out for clues which could lead investigators to determine the cause of the blaze. Special pieces of equipment recently purchased by Government will be used at the scene today. Yesterday, acting Police Commissioner Glen Roach told Newsday that his officers have been given specific instructions to preserve the scene and to ensure that it is not tampered with. He said while some areas of Frederick and Henry Streets were open for pedestrian traffic, barriers will be placed at night to prevent any lawlessness in the gutted area.

He said the investigation into what started the fire on Saturday will take a few days. He was high in praise of yesterday’s traffic plan put together by ACP Mobile Nazamul Hosein. Despite fears of a chaotic traffic backlog, he said the plan worked well and traffic was flowing smoothly in the city. ACP Hosein was out on the streets with his team of officers ensuring the new plan put into place worked well. Certain parts of Frederick, Queen, Henry and Prince Streets were placed under a new traffic plan. Minister of National Security Martin Joseph also commended the police for the smooth flow of traffic into the city. Yesterday, Chief Fire Officer Lennox Alfred held a meeting with his team of officers to discuss Saturday’s fire. The leaking hoses were discussed as well as the non-functioning water hydrants in certains parts of the city.
