TOBAGO YOUTH KILLED IN ‘HORRIBLE’ ACCIDENT

A 17-year-old apprentice fireman from East Tobago was killed and three persons injured, one seriously, following a traffic accident along the Windward Main Road at Richmond yesterday  morning. Dead is Herman Walters, of Louis D’Or Land Settlement., who was in the back seat of the car. He died instantly after he was thrown from the car. The vehicle landed on him, splitting open his head. District Medical Officer (DMO) Dr Maxwell Adeyemi described it as one of the most horrible accidents he had ever seen. The injured persons included Leslie “Peas” Peters, 28, driver of the vehicle, of Charlotteville, who was in critical condition. However, authorities at the Scarborough Hospital,  reported yesterday afternoon that Peters was “resting comfortably”.

The other occupants of the vehicle — Christine Peters, a student of Goodwood High School; Charise Fletcher, 11, Scarborough Secondary School; and Tasha Wallace, 33, employee of the THA Sports Division, all of Charlotteville — were reportedly treated for minor cuts and bruises, and discharged. The accident occurred shortly before 8am. According to an eyewitness report, the car was proceeding west along the Windward Road when the driver  overtook about two vehicles, in quick succession, and was then confronted by a HiLux pick-up van going in the opposite direction. Peters pulled away to avoid colliding with the van and reportedly lost control of the car which crashed through the guard rail on the southern side of the roadway, uprooting two posts and lopping off two palm trees.
