Frustrated student jumps to his death
A foreign student yesterday jumped to his death from the Natural Sciences Building at the University of the West Indies, St Augustine. According to reports, the student, identified as Rischi Cummings, 17, of Belize, became frustrated after failing exams recently. At around 3.15 pm, head of the Student Health Services, Dr Neil Singh, was called by a member of staff of the Faculty of Science and Agriculture, who told him that a student had jumped from the roof of the Natural Sciences Building, and had landed on a bicycle.
Cummings, a first-year student, was rushed to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, where he died shortly afterwards. University officials refused to comment on the incident yesterday. However, sources confirmed that a counselling programme would be set up to assist students at Canada Hall, where the student lived. Similar services would be set up at other parts of the university to assist other affected students.
