‘Skelly’ gets a lawyer

Kidnap accused Sheldon "Skelly" Lovell and his co-accused Sean "Gumbo" Vincent were both appointed an attorney to represent them in the Ronald John kidnapping matter yesterday.

Both men applied for legal aid at the start of the preliminary inquiry into the kidnapping of John, a psychologist, after they indicated to presiding Magistrate Ejenny Espinet that they were not able to afford attorneys, but still wanted legal representation during the proceedings.

Five men are before the court charged with John’s kidnapping on March 26, 2003. They are Sheldon "Skelly" Lovell, Sean "Gumbo" Vincent, Richard "Chinee" Kirton, Brian Charles and Rondell Roberts. Lovell and Vincent remain incarcerated while the three other accused persons are out on bail. The two incarcerated men have both been committed to stand trial at the next sitting of the Assizes for both the kidnapping and murder of Dennis Jodhan, a Curepe teacher who was found dead days after his abduction on December 23, 2003.

When the John kidnapping matter was called yesterday, attorney Wayne Sturge, who was present during the proceedings, was appointed by Espinet to represent Lovell and Vincent. Sturge accepted the appointment after the men indicated they were comfortable with the representation granted.

The two men will reappear in court tomorrow when the matter resumes.
