Cops seize $6M drugs — 7 arrested

Officers of the Organised Crime and Narcotics Unit (OCNU) made a breakthrough yesterday arresting seven persons, including a 37-year-old Nigerian national whom they believe was part of a drug trafficking ring, following two years of surveillance. Police confiscated a haul of cocaine, marijuana and heroine totalling a street value of TT$6.5M in four separate drug busts.

Two US citizens were also arrested for possession of cocaine while four Trinidadians were arrested and charged at a Westmoorings home for possession of marijuana.

OCNU began their crack down exercise at the Piarco International Airport on Friday and around 3 pm, intercepted a 24-year-old female US citizen attempting to board BWIA flight 424 bound for New York with 1 kilo of cocaine found in her luggage. The drugs carried a street value of about TT$400,000. She was charged with possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking and will appear at the Arima Magistrates Court tomorrow.

In a later exercise headed by ASP Edwards, OCNU officers executed a search warrant at a home on Westmoorings Boulevard and arrested four persons aged 20, 22, 24 and 29 who were then charged for possession of marijuana. Over 60 grams of marijuana which appeared to be hydrophonically grown (in-house) were seized. The home was within 500 metres of the International School at Westmoorings.

Around 5 am yesterday, OCNU arrested another US citizen at Piarco International Airport, this time a male passenger on board American Eagle 5095 bound for Puerto Rico. He was found transporting six kilograms of heroine in his luggage and within his clothing bearing a street value of approximately TT$5M.

The Nigerian national was charged with the offence of conspiracy to trafficking drugs. Police said he was also pointed out on several identification parades and suspected to be involved as a major player in several arrests of drug mules at Piarco and Crown Point Airports. His accomplices were arrested, last year for drugs which they swallowed at Piarco, Crown Point, Europe and North America. The cocaine and heroine were concealed in the inner lining of clothing, sandals and table place mats.

The overall exercise was co-ordinated by Supt Corriera and Snr Supt Raymond Craig.
