Filipino woman behind Tabaquite Resource Centre

THE Community Resource Centre in Tabaquite (Coretab), recently opened its doors at 24 Diaz Road, Tabaquite. The centre will provide training for women and youths and will assist in promoting their spiritual, emotional and economical development. The organisation aims to provide low cost technology and training in health and safety, environmental issues and will also assist villagers to become computer literate. Speaking on behalf of the centre, Teresita Superiodad Baluios of the Philippines said, “The community will also be educated on other issues that affect them.”


Baluios, who is public information officer in the Department of Science and Technology in Cagayan De Oro City, Philippines told Newsday: “the centre is a multipurpose community, tele-centre and is a model of what exists in the Philippines. I brought with me a lot of information of the centres that exist in the Philippines and other information on technology.” Baluios said she visited Trinidad three years ago and on returning for vacation, decided to assist the community in putting up this centre.


Baluios said “Students can come to Coretab to do their homework and projects. Internet access and our library will make research quite easy for them.” Coretab is also involved in disaster preparedness. Baluios attended a Disaster Management Workshop in Antigua which was hosted by the Caribbean Water and Waster water Association (CWWA), where she presented a paper entitled “A Communication Model of Disaster Preparedness Programme in the Philippines.” The Centre which is the only one of its kind in Tabaquite will be continuously upgraded.
