Man in court for Pixie’s murder
A crowd hurled abuses at Paul Vincent, 25, when he appeared at the Siparia Magistrates’ Court yesterday charged with last month’s murder of schoolgirl Radha Pixie Lakhan. Policemen had to shield Vincent from an angry mob, comprised mainly of villagers of La Brea Trace, when some of them attempted to spit on him. Vincent also appeared yesterday for last month’s murder of Pixie’s great-aunt, Taramatie Toolsie, 42, also of La Brea Trace. The two killings occurred two weeks apart. Toolsie was killed and covered with tyres, while Pixie was buried in a shallow grave. The girl, a Form Five pupil of Palo Seco Secondary School, went missing for about a month. Her body was found on April 18. Vincent, also of La Brea Trace, was first charged with Toolsie’s murder and was yesterday scheduled to re-appear before Magistrate Jo-Anne Connor to answer that charge. When Vincent arrived in a prison van at the Siparia courthouse compound, he was immediately whisked away to the Siparia CID office next door. There, he was formally charged with Pixie’s murder. The accused wore a pair of black jeans and a grey and white jersey. While he was being led back to the courthouse, scores of people gathered in the compound and along Siparia Main Road, jeering and shouting at Vincent. The magistrate read the first charge against Vincent — of unlawfully killing Toolsie. The second murder charge, against Pixie, was then read to him. Vincent was not called on to plead, as both charges were laid indictably. The magistrate postponed both matters to May 12. Seated in court were Pixie’s relatives, including her father, Rampersad Lakhan.
