10 injured in school melee

A fight broke out among teenaged gang members yesterday at the Five Rivers Junior Secondary School when members of one gang refused to hand over their lunches and extra money.

After the melee, five students had to seek medical attention at the Arima Medical Facility. Two of them were transferred to the Eric Williams’ Medical Sciences Complex, while four were treated at the school compound.

Some of the students were treated for cuts and bruises while others were treated for various other injuries.

The treatment followed the early morning melee which occurred around 8 am in front of the staff room where two teenaged gang members (brothers) started beating and pelting certain students with pieces of concrete, wood, bottle and steel when the teens refused to hand over their lunches and extra money.

Other members of the gang who attend the school joined in the fight which was eventually stopped by the intervention of the school security.

Close to 20 students of the school were eventually held by police and later handed over to their parents after they gave statements to the police.

An investigation has been launched into the attack, while police look for the two La Horquetta brothers who started the attack.

According to information the fight which started on Monday evening when the students of the school refused to give in to the "bullies" in the gang continued yesterday morning. This time resulting in injuries.

When Newsday visited the school, officials directed us to the Ministry of Education supervisors who, at the time, were unable to speak on the matter.

Sources at the school confirmed that the two students have been the cause of several criminal activities in the school, hence there was no surprise as to what happened.

Members of the teaching staff confirmed they have had several reports of the brothers and their gang members beating and robbing students of the school, but the complaints went unheeded although the administration was aware of it. Police have since issued warrants for the arrest of the two brothers, aged 14 and 15.
