Police arrest several vendors in Pos
SEVERAL VENDORS were arrested in downtown Port-of-Spain yesterday during a joint exercise coordinated by the police and Port-of-Spain city police, to clear the city streets of illegal vending. Police officers seized more than $10,000 worth of goods from nine men and one woman. Goods ranging from fresh fruits such as sapodillas and watermelons, as well as hot pies and coolers filled with drinks were seized.
The exercise began at 5.30 am and was carried out on Independence Square, Charlotte Street, George Street, Prince Street, Henry Street and South Quay. The vendors were charged with wilful obstruction, escaping lawful custody, pitching a stall and assaulting an officer. Those arrested were expected to appear before a Port-of-Spain magistrate yesterday afternoon. Officers involved in the exercise included ASP Lee Roy Stephens, Insp Emmanuel Harripaul, Cpl Alexander and ASP Maraj of the Police Traffic Branch.
