Panday: Cabinet reshuffle a joke
OPPOSITION LEADER Basdeo Panday yesterday said the Cabinet reshuffle announced by Prime Minister Patrick Manning on Saturday was "a big joke." After nearly a week of speculation following the resignation of Works and Transport Minister Franklin Khan, the Prime Minister announced five changes to the Cabinet: Colm Imbert (Works and Transport); Christine Kangaloo (Legal Affairs); Danny Montano (Labour); Mustapha Abdul-Hamid (Science, Technology and Tertiary Education) and Anthony Roberts (Social Development). Panday told Newsday that he did not believe that Trinidad and Tobago would benefit in any way from these changes. The UNC leader particularly questioned why the Prime Minister handed the Works and Transport Ministry back to Imbert, who held the portfolio during his first administration (1991 to 1995). Imbert was observed in several close discussions with the Prime minister and other Cabinet ministers. Point Fortin MP Larry Achong, who was at one time reported to have been considered for a Cabinet position, was amused by all the rumours of him going back into the Cabinet. Achong said he was "in semi-retirement" and his emphasis now was tending to the needs of his constituents.
