CARENAGE HITLISTS

FORTY PERSONS on two separate hitlists in the Carenage area are scheduled to be executed by the end of the year by rival drug gang members. Five have already been killed.

This information came to hand following the execution of two more men yesterday morning.

The latest murder victims are Darrel Behere, 23, alias "Fatso," and Neville Cadiz, 25, alias "Toby" and "Bobo." Only 24 hours before, another resident, Khalid Pierre, 20, alias "Bhaggie’’ was gunned down at Frisco Junction, Abbe Poujabe Street, not far from where the last two murders occurred.

Police also believe the March and April killings of Peter Jack and Clem Clarke are all connected to the three weekend murders.

According to reports, Behere and his girlfriend were asleep at his Jones Street, Carenage home at about 4 am, when three gunmen burst in, shooting him in his hand and chest. Less than half an hour afterward, Cadiz was at a house on a track off Sea View Hill, when three men burst in and started shooting. A bleeding Cadiz ran to a nearby outhouse, where he collapsed. His attackers then walked up to him and fired a volley of shots, killing him on the spot.

When Newsday visited the area, some concerned residents explained that the "war" erupted over missing drugs.

"Earlier this year, a shipment of drugs went missing, a rival gang was blamed, and the gang concerned called in another gang from the Morvant area. The Morvant gang leader went on a shooting spree, and the rival gang decided to retaliate.

"Persons affiliated to or associated with members of the rival gangs were put on hitlists to be executed by year’s end. So far, five of these people have been killed and a lot more are expected. "Jack, Pierre and Behere were members of the accusing gang, while Cadiz and Clarke were associated with members of the other gang."

Police confirmed knowledge of the two lists and stated concerns about the killings.

"Yes, we know who the killers involved are, but it is not simple to just hold them. The facts are we are getting no support from the court because the main killer has at least three firearm charges, and he is still walking free after being given bail by a judge in chambers.

"They are encouraged by their lawyers, who use all tricks in the books, to get bail, then they come back into the system and commit more crimes to pay the lawyer.

"While it is a case of gang members killing each other over turf, drugs and reprisals, they are putting fear in innocent people. And because of regulations our hands are tied.

"What is needed is a police mobile booth at Frisco Junction, Abbe Poujabe and the authority given to the police to go out and use the old Flying Squad methods."

Visiting the scenes were Snr Supt Roach, Supt Cadette, ASP Julius, Insp Lezama, Sgts Adams, Pererra and Cpl John. Sgt John is investigating the murder of Pierre, Sgt Adams is on Behere’s murder, and Sgt Pererra is investigating the killing of Cadiz.

Police also believe the shooting of Fabian Joseph in his stomach at his Mt Pleasant Street, Abbe Poujabe home yesterday morning is related to the ongoing gang war.

TT recorded 124 murders in 137 days, with the latest two executions. Ninety murders had been recorded during the same period last year. Six have been reported in the Carenage area.
