Kamla tells AG: See you in court

OPPOSITION MP for Siparia, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, yesterday said she was unperturbed by the fact that Attorney General John Jeremie has sued her for damages for libel because, "I (Persad-Bissessar) know his (Jeremie) action is unfounded and without merit in law or in common sense."

On Monday, Jeremie took legal action against Persad-Bissessar, the publishers, two editors and two reporters of two Sunday newspapers in relation to statements made by the Siparia MP at a public meeting in Montrose last Friday, and the related articles published in those newspapers.

In a statement yesterday, Persad-Bissessar informed the AG, "The last time I checked, I know I do have court clothes to attend court successfully." She said Jeremie should have responded immediately to the allegations she made in Montrose and claimed his action "reflects the doings of an insecure person."

"Morever, his action makes abundantly clear that he has no real understanding of the law of defamation as he will find out to his detriment," Persad-Bissessar added. The Siparia MP has also written to House Speaker Barry Sinanan to request that she be allowed to raise a motion on the adjournment of the next sitting of the House of Representatives, entitled "the failure of the AG to refer Councillor (Dansam) Dhansook’s allegations of bribe-taking by Messrs Khan and Williams to the Commissioner of Police, Fraud Squad and the Director of Public Prosecutions." Through the motion, Persad-Bissessar is calling on Jeremie to answer some pertinent questions on the matter.

The Lower House has been adjourned to a date to be fixed, but when the House sits next, Ortoire/Mayaro MP Franklin Khan is likely to take a seat in the Government’s back benches since resigning on May 8 as Works and Transport Minister. Khan was previously seated at the immediate right of Prime Minister Patrick Manning in the Government front benches, and could return to his former seat, behind Manning and next to Health Minister John Rahael.
