Bagatelle villagers attack policemen
OFFICERS of the Western Division had to defend themselves yesterday at Bagatelle Village, Diego Martin, when a group of villagers attacked the officers, accusing them of police brutality. The attack took place when police arrested four men for possession of ammunition and a firearm. A woman was later arrested for resisting arrest, obscene language and assault of an officer. According to reports between midday and 1 pm yesterday, a party of officers led by Sgt Jane Martin, including PCs Samuel, Jack, Codrington and Nurse, had cause to arrest three men and their father ages, 24, 22, 26 and 48 for possession of a 9mm semi-automatic high-powered pistol/shotgun with six rounds of .38 ammunition. While arresting the men, they were attacked by villagers who formed a barrier and were surging forward. Another group openly suggested that they "mash up" the police car. The officers called for back-up, and with reinforcements were able to contain the crowd. During the melee, an officer was allegedly bitten by a woman. All five people are expected to appear before a Port-of-Spain magistrate today. Meanwhile, police concern about the seized gun, claiming it was the second time this type of gun has surfaced in this country.
