Madman slashes mom, daughter’s throats in bed

A SCHOOL TEACHER and her 84-year-old mother were found in a blood-soaked bed in La Brea yesterday, after a man waged a knife attack on them, slashing their throats and leaving them for dead. Margaret Charles, 54, and Marilyn Broadbelt, 84, of Celestial Park, Vessigny Village, were warded yesterday in serious condition at the San Fernando General Hospital.

Police said yesterday they are searching for a mentally ill man in connection with the incident.

Relatives made the shocking discovery of Charles and Broadbelt in a pool of blood at around 2.30 am. They heard noises in the house and stormed into the bedroom which the mother and daughter shared.

According to a police report, when relatives switched on the lights, they saw Charles and Broadbelt bleeding from wounds across their necks. They were unconscious. Police said the relatives put pieces of cloth on the wounds in a frantic attempt to stop the bleeding. They immediately contacted the police and the EHS.

The women were rushed to the hospital where they underwent emergency surgery. When Newsday visited their home yesterday, a male relative declined to speak about the incident. La Brea police officers are searching for the man.
